First off don't get me wrong I am more than happy with the purchase of the Wii U, it's a good, interesting system and it complements my gaming PC well.
With that said it does make you wonder how well will the Wii U go in the next couple of years, the next Xbox and PlayStation are on the way, we keep getting news that some developers/publishers wont be releasing their multi-platform released game on the Wii U for *insert bull shit reason here*, and lastly there really isn't anything "epic" on the way that we know of.

You'd think that because the Nintendo have a lot riding on this console that they would be going nuts with advertising, they would be giving us previews of all the big projects they have in the works. You know anything to keep us excited about the future of this console.

With that said I will be supporting this system right to the end, I do like it a lot because unlike the 360 and PS3 that I previously owned this console has single handedly got me back into console gaming.

I think all the exclusive Nintendo games will keep it shining.. Once they bring out zelda in HD, mario kart etc it will keep selling. ^_^

My personal opinion of what's happening is this - The western branches of Nintendo have absolutely no influence or power AT ALL! If you look at the key partnerships Nintendo are making, it's based around Japanese developers, working on "big in Japan" franchises for the Japanese audience. MH3U and RE:Revelations from Capcom, Bayonnetta 2 and 101 from Platinum Games, X from Monolith, Fire Emblem vs Shin Megami Tensai, teaming with Namco on Smash and allowing Nintendo characters in Tekken, funding Ninja Gaiden from Team Ninja. Now, where are the equivalent partnerships in the West? We have one partnership that I know of and that's for Lego City(well two if you count the late port of Batman). Where are the rest? Why isn't Nintendo of America or Europe making the same kinds of partnerships with Western devs/publishers? We see a Japanese company making the right kind of deals to boost the Wii U in the Japanese market while the western branches just have to hope that some of these titles will have broad appeal in their market. The upside of having little western support is that more games that may not of been localised in the past will be now to pad out the release schedule. If there had been a steady release of western games releasing towards the end of the Wii's life we may never have seen titles like Xenoblade, Last Story and Pandora's Tower get released in the West. I think what it boils down to is this, if you love eastern style games( I do) you'll enjoy what the Wii U will offer over its life. If you're big on western style games you'll probably be better off with the next Xbox or Playstation. That's my honest opinion.

I think Nintendo just needs another big Western studio, Retro is the only notable one they have.

I don't think a lack of third-party support is not through any fault of Nintendo or their lack of trying. It's just that you can't expect publishers to invest in games for the platform if the market doesn't exist, which it doesn't.

IMO Nintendo should stick to making cheap hardware and appeasing its first-party market, because wanting to appease third-parties will in the long run put them in a worse off position.

I think for many of us we buy the latest Nintendo console simply for those Nintendo franchises.

If it came down to it, I think Nintendo could survive with their first (and second) party games. I would still like to see a strong push for third party titles and I think the next generation, Nintendo has the sufficient hardware to maintain at least some of the major third party titles (even if it is just a lesser port).

Absolutely not. If they want that hardcore audience back for this, and next generation (which I doubt there will be a next generation but anyway....) they need to support third parties with everything they have.

They need a big hardcore exclusive. Not a JRPG exclusive, a western game that will make gamers flock to them in droves.

Totally agree with you. NoA needs to play a more pivotal role in the company. They need to make a killer partnership. Nintendo needs a "Naughty Dog" in their roster. They need that big western studio that develops a unique IP that steps away from Nintendo's traditional system sellers and gives us something mature and thought provoking.

Personally I don't mind. It will be sad, but I really think the console market is a dying beast. As long as I get more Zelda and Mario, then I don't care what platform I need to play them on.

They had that for Wii though. Do you think a game like Conduit would have performed better on PS3? I think it would have.

The market doesn't exist. Unfortunately in this economic climate hoping it will just appear before it exists is too risky and that's why publishers aren't doing it.

Nintendo had a hardcore crowd with the Gamecube, but lost it with the Wii.

I do. I think competition is an amazing thing. I'm sure Nintendo embraces the competition more than they fear it.

Competition is good for gamers.

me too. i like the collecting aspect of console gaming. i have ZERO interest in collecting digital copies or cloud based games. i'll probably go 100% retro at that point.

Without consoles, I reckon games would just die down a lot overall. What about the parents who buy consoles for their kids or the people who don't like gaming on PCs at all. I prefer consoles because it's easy just to put in game and play, unlike the installing on pc crap, crashing a lot more than consoles. I do like the quality difference but consoles a less hassle. I would rather have a game where the graphics a slightly worse than having to check if my PC is capable at running the game and if not having to upgrade it

PC market would probably become saturated, leading to more machines, cheaper and hardware and, eventually, another crash, just like we're seeing now.

I think developers may be surprised when the new next gen consoles don't sell too well due to their high price point. The world is a lot different now than it was in 2005/6.

Given circumstances they probably will all sell well, but comparison to previous gen numbers will mean little.

Maybe, just maybe especially given no backwards compatibility, the new next gen consoles may be a lot worse off than the wii U, and devs may jump ship.

That's my biggest gripe with the next gen consoles, pricing. I was really surprised with the Wii U's price and I think the same thing could apply for the PS4 and the next XBOX.

Here's hoping. I'll grab a second console for sure when the time is right. My problem is my ps3 crapped out and I was hoping to get a PS4 early to pick up the recent PS3 games I'm missing. Damn you and your lack of BC. Oh well.....

It affects early attachment rates, in the long run I don't think it has mattered up until now.

In the future when we're more closer to a digital only future it will due to it being extremely important to preserve what you've purchased, but at the moment backwards compatiblity affects early attachment rates when there's a software drought of only having launch titles on the system.
